Email from Faffy to Ellie:
Hi, Elle,
Before we advance beyond the planning stage to the actual shell-out-the-money stage (the Seattle Yacht Club wants an advance by next week to reserve the room and we'll have to buy plane tickets very soon), you and Dan need to consider the alternative we have always said we would offer to our children -- namely a bribe, so to speak, to keep it simple -- very simple.
Specifically what I have in mind is to give you the $ we will spend at the SYC. In exchange, you plan a simple ceremony with family and a very few close friends. You could have it at Dan's home, our home, or somewhere in
Seattle that would not involve cost or the traditional trappings that go along with formal wedding ceremonies. It would still be a very nice occasion, just more intimate than most weddings turn out to be.
Talk it over seriously. I guarantee you'll enjoy the $ more if you spend on yourselves rather than a big party that most people don't want to go to anyway.
love, pop

Some Loving Guidance
Email to Ellie, from a good friend:
Please ladies, heed my word.
It has come to my attention that several of you are listening to the devil's music.
Depeche Mode? The Indigo Girls? With your choices you're basically begging to be driven to deviant sapphic love.
Read the list and reflect. Ellie, you should be particularly careful. You are, after all, on the verge of a god-sanctioned heterosexual marriage.
xxoxoxox (but not the gay kind)

Mom-Annie's Congratulations
Email from Mom-Annie to Ellie:
Hey Ellie! Congratulations on your engagement to Wedge! He is a very lucky person (I hope he deserves someone as great as you).
And I understand, from your and your Mom's descriptions, that you are lucky too! Yeah!
Also, Happy Birthday to you. I hope your year is fun and funny.
We will be in Mexico for the next 2 weeks, so I thought I'd send you this quick hooray note.
love,
Annie

We're Engaged!
Email from Dan:
Friends and Family,
Hey all! I haven't talked to a bunch of you in a long time, but I have some exciting news to share with you all, as the people that I care about most. Last night, I asked the most amazing woman in the world to marry me. She said yes. Her name is Ellie Swanson. She is in my med school class, and we've been dating for about 4 months now, and I am more sure that I want to spend the rest of my life with her than I am about anything else in the world. I asked her at a little french restaurant (Le Central) here in Denver. We are really not sure when or where we are going to be wed, but of course I will let you all know when we figure it out. It's probably not going to be this year though. For now, know that I am happy and madly in love with an incredible woman who I am honored to be engaged to.
