Consider hiring a realtor as a "buyer's agent" in looking for a home.  Costs the same as using the listing agent.

I am sure she would be delighted to help you guys even if you wind up renting at the beginning.

hey ladies!

it finally happened. adam proposed! got down on his knee and the whole bit. we were in michigan at his family's house (his parents and siblings were out for the moment) and he caught me completely off guard. i cried like a baby. the ring is really beautiful and original---the main stone is an opal---like his mom's engagement ring. anyway! just wanted y'all to know! we're planning on getting married not this summer but next, probably on the oregon coast. i'll keep you updated of course. i can't wait for us all to be together again! that's such a perk of getting married. get ready for some karaoke at the bachelorette party. i'm already brainstorming songs to assign to each of you!
